Poorman’s 15 Minutes of Fame: Jed the Fish Tribute
“I just turned 21, I was an intern. I was filing papers and getting lunch for the jocks. And I wanted to get on the radio, and Jed let me sit in the control room with him. And you know, I bring his lunch in and then he just let me hang there. I would watch him and I was just in awe.
I was amazed at the way he worked. First, there’s two things. I would watch his fingers when he was talking and his fingers would get all kinda spider like. They would play with the pots, which are the the volume controls on the board, and they were all over the board as he would talk. He would queue up records while talking. And the coolest thing that would just drive me nuts is he would wait so long before queuing up the next record.
He’d be talking to you and stuff, but you’re looking at the record. I think it has like another thirty seconds on it. And then he would stand up, look to see what song is next, go to the back of the room, go to this wall of vinyl, just know right where to throw his hand into these sleeves of records, pull out the record, throw you know, shake it. The vinyl drops into his hand. He comes over and he’s like, that song is ending, we have to wind this. And then he would just look at me and he would just cue it up, that standard a quarter turn, perfect segue. He would just put this this constriction on himself to see if he could do it in fifteen seconds, you know. And I just. I was always amazed at that, nervous at it, and, and grateful that he would let me hang out and learn from, from one of the best.”
